CHS ACTIVITIES

Here is a listing of all the clubs and athletics at Columbia High School.  Many of these groups have received financial support from the Cougar Booster Club.

SPECIAL INTEREST CLUBS

(Activities meet year-long unless otherwise stated.)

All School Musical – Performances in the spring (Mr. Healy, Main Office)

American Civil Liberties Union – Activities relate to the rights of citizens & the importance of these rights. (Mr. Campbell, D100)

Art Club – Activities include visiting artists, discussion of artwork, films (Mr. McKim, D105)

Astronomy – A club for students interested in the science of astronomy & the use of the telescope. (Mr. Levin, B308)

Biology Team – New Jersey Science League. Practice for competition January through April (TBD)

Branches of Faith - Open to all, the club has a Christian perspective & performs community service visiting shelters & senior citizens’ homes, tutoring. (Ms. Brundidge)

Brass Ensemble – Meets weekly from October to January. Performs at community functions, concerts, & assemblies. (Mr. Bauer, C233)

Chess Team – After-school play provides opportunities to develop skills & knowledge. Emphasis is on playing the game with occasional sessions devoted to openings, defense, and other techniques. The better players compete interscholastically. (Mr. Eismann, A318)

Color Guard – A part of the Marching Band which includes twirling, flags, and associated routines. (Mr. Veninger, C233)

Columbia Haitian-American Club – (Ms. Marshall)

Columbian – This group publishes the school’s weekly newspaper. The club offers experience in writing lay-out, photography, typesetting, business management, proof-reading, art. (Mrs. McGrane, A249 and Mr. Seldin, D109)

Facing Race - Are issues of race handled well in our community? Can we improve everyone’s experience? Do you want to try? (Ms. Mastellone, A312 and Mr. Reyes, A317)

Future Business Leaders – Its goal is to develop competent, aggressive business leadership. The organization is open to all students interested in better understanding American business enterprise. (TBD)

Ground Zero - Provides an environment to share and develop ideas and turn them into action. (Ms. Stelmasik, A253)

Guildscript – The literary and art magazine is a medium for student creative efforts. Writers & artists are urged to submit original works which are considered for inclusion in the annual publication.  (Mr. Lasko, A209)

Guitar/Songwriting - Students and faculty who share a common interest in guitar playing and songwriting meet together to learn and perform for each other. (Mr. Lester, C231)

Habitat for Humanity – Students participate in building/rehabilitating houses in partnership with affiliates; raises funds; educates the school & community. (Mr. MacPherson)

Italian Cultural Club – Students will enjoy & experience Italian heritage & culture. (Mr. Tancredi, D314)

Jazz Ensemble
– Meets evenings weekly from October to June. Performs at community and school functions. This band has received national recognition on numerous occasions. (Mr. Bauer, C233)

Junior States of America – Members participate in debates, problem solving, and open forum discussions. Students attend conferences and learn about current events, politics & government issues facing our leaders today. (Mr. Campbell, D100)

Listeners’ Club – Provides exposure to serious recordings & a congenial atmosphere. (Mr. Pollioni, A257)

Library Aids
– Assist in the daily operation of the library

Magic Club - Students who are interested in pursuing and performing. (Mr. Healy, A103E)

Marching Band – Performs at football games and enters Fall competitions. (Mr. Bauer, C233)

Martin Luther King Assn.
– A club open to all, devoted to the remembrance of the civil rights movement and black history. (Mr. DeVita, C221 and Mr. Whitaker, A206)

Math Team – A competitive program which provides skilled mathematicians the opportunity to participate in the Iron Hills Conference League. (Mr. Gulati, B340 and Mr. Wolfmeyer, A316)

Mock Trial – Students learn about the trial process & stage their own versions of cases. They also compete in county, state, & national competitions with other high school teams.  (Mr. Campbell, D100)

National Organization of Women (N.O.W.) – This chapter promotes and supports women’s rights and is affiliated with the national organization. (Ms. Lindahl)

Parnassian – The drama society, responsible for producing plays. (Ms. Bustrin)

Political Awareness – An organization dedicated to educating the public & future voters as to the political and election processes. (Mr. Campbell, D100)

Quiz Bowl – A club for an academic team which competes in Jeopardy style competitions throughout the tri-state area.  Click here to learn more. (Mr. Festerling)

React -

Slam (Live) Poetry Club
– Students write and perform poems, offer constructive criticism, participate in competitions (slams). (Mrs. Giacomazzi, A251)

Spectrum – Students meet to discuss issues relevant to & in support of students and their families who self-identify as straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or are questioning these issues. (Mr. Reyes, B238)

Stage Crew – Activities include building scenery, stage lighting and sound for school productions and assemblies, and for non-school events. (Mr. Jeron)

Velocity– The teen magazine. (TBD)

Yearbook – A group of students, representing all grades, who work together to plan and complete the Mirror. Freshmen are encouraged to join this rewarding activity. (Ms Liguori, C101 and Mrs. Tenenbaum, Counseling Center)

SERVICE CLUBS

ACHIEVE Volunteer Tutors: Students serve as tutors for elementary, middle, or high school students after school, evenings, & weekends (Counseling Center)

AIDS Awareness - Increase awareness in the school & community regarding HIV & AIDS & raise funds for local treatment facilities. (Mrs. Rabke, A112)

Amnesty International - A human rights advocacy group. Our chapter is part of the international organization. (TBD)

Art in the Community – beautification of community spaces (parks, etc.) by painting murals. (TBD)

Big Brothers/Big Sisters – a mentoring program in which CHS students work with elementary school children within and outside our community. (Mr. MacPherson, A205)

FLES – Students teach foreign languages to elementary school students. (Mrs. Politi, D311)

GAIA – The school’s environmental organization which sponsors recycling projects and visits elementary schools to heighten environmental awareness. (Mrs. Daur, B314 and Mr. Hall, B304)

(Chapter of) the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation – Educate & heighten awareness about breast cancer; fund-raise for research. (Mrs. Stein, A216)

Key Club – An organization which performs various service projects in the community. (Mr. DeVita, C221 and Ms. Stelmasik, A253)

Kids for Kids – a community-service club which helps different types of children in need. (Ms. LoBionco, A113)

Peer Mediation - Service program to help students resolve conflicts among their peers. (Ms. LoBionce, A113)

Seeds of Learning – promote literacy in developing countries by providing basic school supplies for schools in need. (TBD)

Students Serving Seniors – Students assist senior citizens with household and yard chores. (Mrs. Schuler, A102)

Tour Guides – Students interested in providing a pre-set guided tour of Columbia for parents and community members.  (Mrs. Mason, A103G)
